Martin Residence

Scarborough, Maine

The design for this new residence on the edge of a Maine coastal marsh uses indigenous materials such as white cedar shingles siding and native brick for the chimney. It also incorporates passive solar techniques such as concentrating the main living spaces and windows to the south side of the house and clustering the low-use areas to the north with limited windows.

Nestled close to the ground to honor the form of the land as well as to provide views through the understory of mature-growth trees to the marsh beyond, the house captures prevailing summer winds. The predominant living area is on the first floor, with a partial second story consisting of two bedrooms and one bathroom.
