Catherine Morrill Day Nursery

Portland, Maine

Our phased master plan for the pre-school was focused on bringing the entire building and play areas in compliance with accessibility and building codes. One of the most significant aspects of the renovation plan was the inclusion of a winding ramp to the playground that blurs the line between inside and out, play and learning, access and protection. The curvilinear ramp unites an existing brick wall at one end of the playground with the building itself to create a play-zone and provide an engaging sequence into the outdoor playground. The ramp includes a mesh-screen at the railing level that allows for visual monitoring of children throughout the play area.
