Baxter Academy for Technology and Science

Baxter Academy for Technology and Science is a rigorous, college-preparatory charter high school promoting student ownership of learning through curriculum focused specifically on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Baxter Academy students study complex, real-world problems, using and building technological tools in a collaborative environment with scientists, engineers and other professionals.

Located in the City of Portland, Baxter Academy is engaged in growing their curriculum and student population from 280 students to 350 students.  B+W catalogued the actual classroom and office sizes, conducted programming with key groups of faculty and students and, worked to determine an ideal room size and arrangement that optimizes collaboration in student interaction.

From the program, B+W developed concept plans for a new school, worked with a contractor to prepare cost estimates, coordinated the local permitting process, and worked with the owner and their realtor to strategize viable leasing options for landlord negotiations.

The B+W plans were for a new school located downtown in a former department store. Plans explored full location to three floors of space to partial relocation for one floor.  Project sizes range from 20,000 SF to 34,000 SF, while construction costs range from $1.8 million to $3 million.
